Holiness Is A White Robe

My Blog

In the beginning of the bible we are told about what happens to people when they stop being holy.

'The Fall'

Genesis:3:7

'Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realised they were naked.  So they sewed fig-leaves together to make themselves loin-cloths.'

and

Genesis 3:9-11

'But Yahweh God called to the man.  "Where are you?" he asked.  "I heard the sound of you in the garden;" he replied "I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid."  "Who told you that you were naked?" he asked "Have you been eating of the tree I forbade you to eat?"

God banished Adam and Eve because they had sinned against Him.  They were found to be naked, that is they were no longer clothed in white garments - holiness, therefore, they could not be allowed in God's presence.

Later on in the Wisdom books it says:

Ecclesiastes 9:8

'Wear white all the time, do not stint your head of oil.'

This means keep being holy and filled with the Spirit of God; the Holy Spirit.

In the New Testament it says:

Matthew 7:21-23

'The true disciple'

Yeshua said,

"It is not those who say to me, "Lord, Lord", who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in Heaven.  When the day comes many will say to me, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, work many miracles in your name?"  Then I shall tell them to their faces:  I have never known you; away from me, you evil men!"

Did you notice the part where Yeshua says 'many will say to me'?  This means that unless all believers live a holy life until the second coming we are going to walk away from Yeshua devastated when he will tell us to our faces that he never knew us.

Yeshua also says that whoever does the will of his Father in heaven will enter the kingdom of heaven, as the Lord's prayer says, 'your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven'.  If we do our own will we will never get into the kingdom of heaven.  Remember, many are called, but few are chosen.

In Matthew 22:11-14

'Parable of the wedding feast'

Yeshua said,

'When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a wedding garment, and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?"  And the man was silent.  Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth".  For many are called, but few are chosen.'

The man, who was a believer and so was saved, was not given a white garment to wear to the wedding feast of the Lamb because he did not live a holy life after he was called by God.  He was found to be naked and shameful; bound hand and foot by God's angels and thrown out of the holy city into outer darkness with the hypocrites.

Matthew 24:48-51

'Parable of the conscientious steward'

Yeshua says:

'But as for the dishonest servant who says to himself, "My master is taking his time", and sets about beating his fellow servants and eating and drinking with drunkards, his master will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know.  The master will cut him off and send him to the same fate as the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.'

Believers are being warned by Yeshua about getting drunk, abusing fellow Christians and forgetting all about following Yeshua so we can spend all our time with sinners, all the while convincing ourselves that Yeshua will not return in our lifetime.  Yeshua will then return when we least expect it and he will not let us into the kingdom of heaven.  We will have to spend our eternal lives with the hypocrites in eternal darkness because we did not lead a holy life.

In 2 Peter 2:20

'The punishment to come'

Peter writes,

'and anyone who has escaped the pollution of the world once by coming to know our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ, and who then allows himself to be entangled by it a second time and mastered, will end up in a worse state than he began in.  It would even have been better for him never to have learnt the way of holiness, than to know it and afterwards desert the holy rule that was entrusted to him.'

Peter writes a warning to us believers that if, after we are saved, we return to the way we lived before then it would have been better if we had never been saved at all.  This is because we will be banished into eternal darkness with the hypocrites and never be allowed into the holy city and the presence of God, let alone be invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.

In the Book of Revelation it says:

Revelation 3:4-6

The Church of Sardis

Yeshua said,

"There are a few in Sardis, it is true, who have kept their robes from being dirtied, and they are fit to come with me, dressed in white.  Those who prove victorious will be dressed, like these, in white robes; I shall not blot their names out of the book of life, but acknowledge their names in the presence of my Father and his angels.  If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches."

Only a few people in the church of Sardis have kept their holiness, while the rest have not.  These ones will enter the kingdom of heaven with Yeshua, while the others will have their names blotted out from the Lamb's book of life.

Revelation 3:15-18

The Church of Laodicea

Yeshua said,

"I know all about you:  how you are neither cold nor hot.  I wish you were one or the other, but since you are neither, but only lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth.  You say to yourself, 'I am rich, I have made a fortune, and have everything I want', never realising that you are wretchedly and pitiably poor, and blind and naked too.  I warn you, buy from me the gold that has been tested in the fire to make you really rich, and white robes to cloth you and cover your shameful nakedness, and eye ointment to put on your eyes so that you are able to see."

The church of Laodicea is naked because it is full of sin.  Even  though it is a believing church, it is not leading a holy life and Yeshua instructs them to buy white robes from him.

Revelation 6:9-11

'The Lamb breaks the seven seals'

'When he broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of all the people who had been killed on account of the word of God, for witnessing to it.  They shouted aloud, "Holy, faithful Master, how much longer will you wait before you pass sentence and take vengeance for our death on the inhabitants of the earth?"  Each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to be patient a little longer, until the roll was complete and their fellow servants and brothers had been killed just as they had been.'

These are the saints who gave their lives for Yeshua and kept the commandments of God; they lived a holy life and were martyrs and so were given a white robe.

and also;

Revelation 7:9

'The rewarding of the saints'

'After that I saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, tribe and language; they were standing in front of the throne and in front of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palms in their hands.'

and also;

Revelation 7:13-15

'One of the elders then spoke, and asked me, "Do you know who these people are, dressed in white robes, and where they have come from?"  I answered him, "You can tell me, my lord".  Then he said, "These are the people who have been through the great persecution, and because they have washed their robes white again in the blood of the Lamb, they now stand in front of God's throne and serve him day and night in his sanctuary; and the One who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them.'

These persecuted saints are each given a white robe so they can be in the presence of God.  In order to be in the presence of God you have to be holy (with the exception of Satan and his angels; God has already prepared a time for their judgement after which they will be thrown into eternal fire and punishment).  A white robe is the righteous deeds of the saints and because the tribulation saints gave up their lives for Yeshua's sake, they washed their robes white in the blood of the Lamb again and are considered holy.

Revelation 16:15

Yeshua said,

"This is how it will be:  I shall come like a thief.  Happy is the man who has stayed awake and not taken off his clothes so that he does not go out naked and expose his shame."

Yeshua is telling believers that unless we continue a life of holiness while we await his return we will go into heaven naked and then be thrown out.

These are just a few bible verses, there are many more, that warn us to live holy lives so that we may be given a white robe in order to be allowed into heaven into the presence of God.

The warning is clear for believers, those who are baptised and do not live holy lives are certain of being found naked, bound hand and foot and thrown out of the kingdom of heaven into outer darkness with the hypocrites where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth and have our names blotted out of the Lamb's book of life.

We will not have access to the holy city, the tree of life, or the river of life.  We will never be allowed into God's presence where there is light but will live forever in eternal darkness.

What are we to do then until the return of Yeshua?  Repent every single day and work out our salvation with fear and trembling.

Maranatha!  Even so, come Lord Jesus!
