St. Andrew in the Bible

Saint Andrew in Israel

I discovered this sign in Tiberias - The Old City in Israel, in front of a church. As St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, I thought it was strange to see his church in Israel. You can see that the writing on the sign is in English, Hebrew, and Arabic.

St. Andrew's Day is celebrated on 30th November every year in Scotland, and the national flag of Scotland is a white, x-shaped cross on a blue background known as the saltire.

St. Andrew is in the Bible. He was a fisherman from Galilee, Israel, and the brother of St. Peter. He was Yeshua's (Jesus) first disciple and was originally a disciple of John the Baptizer. After Jesus, or Yeshua, was baptized and proclaimed as the Lamb of God by John, St. Andrew was personally called by Yeshua and became one of His twelve apostles.

After Yeshua's death, resurrection, and ascension to heaven, St. Andrew was amongst those who received the Holy Spirit in the upper room in Jerusalem.

After faithfully proclaiming the good news, St. Andrew was martyred by the Romans on an x-shaped cross in Patras, Greece about the time of 60 AD. The x-shaped cross was St. Andrew's idea in order to distinguish him from Yeshua because he did not feel worthy enough to be compared to Him.

St. Andrew's is one of the names that will be written on one of the twelve foundation stones of the city walls of the holy city of the New Jerusalem - Revelation 21:14.

Read about St. Andrew in the Gospels and the Book of Acts.
